Simon’s Edge™ – Vol. 19

Here is Volume 18 of “Simon’s Edge,” previously called “Simon Says Weatherwise & Otherwise,” an out-of-box and alternative collection of news link substantiated intelligence on the subjects of climate, weather, technology, financial investments/commodities, socio-economic and health-related risks, issues, ideas, potential “Black Swans” and insights  to help gain Bulldog Pundit readers an ‘edge’ in the onslaught of news from around the world.

IS NASA MANIPULATING APOLLO IMAGES OF THE MOON?
Tampered images of the moon?  Does NASA (the government) not want you and I seeing certain things on the moon?  This may sound all conspiracy-theory, and over the years, I have thrown out a lot of junk, but this is something.  You be the judge.

KICKING THE CAN DOWN THE ROAD SEEMS TO BE WHAT WE DO NOWADAYS
Newspapers the world over are declaring that the financial crisis in Europe is over.  Stock markets have soared; the recent surge has helped the S&P 500 to have its best month since 1974.  While European leaders have been able to ‘kick the can’ down the road and a total Greek default is not going to happen right now, the “debt deal” actually make a financial disaster in Europe even more likely.

ANOTHER URBAN CRISIS … THIS TIME WHEN A MAJOR FLOOD HITS
Bangkok, a city of 11 million, is now bracing for at least an additional 3-5 weeks of immense flooding as the largest modern-day evacuation in Thailand gets under way.  But during this period and into the New Year, there could be a humanitarian crisis due to cut-off supplies, power cuts and water / septic contamination, and then mounting risk of water-borne diseases; that doesn’t even take into account the crocodiles (Thailand is the world’s biggest breeder of crocodiles; scores are reported to have escaped from farms in central parts during the floods).

ARE WE LEARNING ANY LESSONS FROM THE BP DISASTER?
Comprehensive safety legislation hasn’t passed Congress, and BP hasn’t paid the fines they owe for their spill, yet BP is being given back the keys to drill in the Gulf.  Leaking abandoned wells pose a significant environmental and economic threat:  a three-month EcoHearth investigation revealed that a minimum of 2.5 million abandoned wells in the US and 20-30 million worldwide receive no follow up inspections to ensure they are not leaking.  Real nice.  Worse:  there is no known technology for securely sealing these tens of millions of abandoned wells.  Many—likely hundreds of thousands — are already hemorrhaging oil, brine and greenhouse gases into the environment.  Habitats are being fundamentally altered.  Aquifers are being destroyed.  Some of these abandoned wells are explosive, capable of building-leveling, toxin-spreading detonations.

TRACKING YOUR FOOTSTEPS…LITERALLY
Health professionals say the new GPS shoes could be a real boon for the more than five million Americans who suffer from Alzheimer’s Disease.  With all compassion to Alzheimer’s victims, caregivers and their geographically distant family members, this tracking device is NOT a good idea, because most allopathic doctors don’t know one important thing – that is, more electromagnetic devices near our body will only further disorient us.

YOU WILL SOON BE TRACKED (AND NOT EVEN KNOW IT)
If you buy a shirt in your local department store, an RFID could very well be sown into the lapel and you’d never know it.  RFID tagging of apparel is now the largest and fastest-growing application of RFID in retailing.  An RFID in your shoes would allow the manufacturer to track your every movement.  A tracking device could also be placed in a passport or driver’s license and [the government could] track an individual anywhere.  Do the math … 95%+ of us will be tagged in < 10 years.

MEAT FROM GATE TO PLATE
Unsafe food – it’s all over.  This quick story of a butcher with 45 years experience has seen some horrendous things in retail meat markets.  He’s seen managers wash chicken in Clorox; the line of the maggots in the bottom of the saw is priceless.

A DECADE SINCE THE PATRIOT ACT
The massive Department of Homeland Security (DHS), an unnecessary conglomeration of 22 agencies and nearly 200,000 employees, together with an out of control FBI and CIA, engage in massive surveillance of all of us, not just suspected terrorists or criminals.  Our phone calls, our emails and website visits, our financial records, our travel itineraries, and our digital images captured on powerful surveillance cameras are adding to the mountains of data being mined for suspicious patterns and associations.  In the last decade, civil liberties groups have criticized the PATRIOT Act as going too far by scooping up too much data and violating people’s rights to privacy.  Now, whether or not you have an opinion about the enslavement slant of this writing, it’s important to see how the construction of a sovereign life may be possible.

HOW VISA’S “SECRET LOCATION” OPERATION CENTER FUNCTIONS – AND HOW 8,000 TRANSACTIONS A SECOND ARE SAFE-GUARDED

This is all about how VISA protects your data (or doesn’t …we know that the “secret” building is in Loudoun County, VA).

OCTOBER 29, 1969 – THE DAY THE INTERNET WAS BORN
For those that like a little bit of pictorial history of the first Internet hook-up at UCLA.

As always, thanks for reading.  I appreciate your interest.  Until next week … connect the dots, be aware and seek out the ‘edge’ you need.
