In Memory of Mama Marie

In the Borough of Lodi, New Jersey on this day in 1935, Marie Calabrese was born into this world – a child of Ida and Carl Calabrese and progeny of the Great Depression. Growing up in that predominately Italian-American town, she absorbed all of its virtues and none of its vices – and I cannot think of a kinder, more gentle soul that I have ever encountered in my travels nor one for which I pine so fiercely to see again.

Here is a photo of my mother – cradling my 3 year old daughter Claudia in her arms – taken in 1993.

After a long illness, Mama Marie passed away in her sleep in the wee hours of Easter Sunday, April 11, 2004. My heart has ached in her absence ever since.

And that’s all I have to say about that.
